About Us

The National ABS Law Firm Association

The National ABS Law Firm Association is an exclusive national trade association of U.S. alternative business structure (ABS) model law firms, to include the ABS model structure in Arizona, Washington D.C., the Utah Office of Legal Services Innovation (Sandbox), and any other state that choose to adopt the program. The purpose of the Association is to advocate the positive aspects of the ABS model within the legal industry to provide affordable and quality legal services. The association works to educate the public, local & national legal associations, state and local bar associations and regulators, courts, and others regarding the positive impact that alternative legal service providers are having. In addition, the association promotes how such providers offer competent legal services to consumers.

What is an ABS

An Alternative Business Structure, or ABS, is a law firm licensed by the Arizona Supreme Court that includes non-lawyers who have an economic interest in the law firm. According to the State Supreme Court, when implementing this ABS program in 2021 it is “rooted in the idea that entrepreneurial lawyers and individuals would pilot a range of different business forms” that will ultimately improve access to justice and the delivery of legal services. ABS law firm structures have existed for years in the United Kingdom and Australia. Arizona is the first U.S. jurisdiction to implement rule changes for a permanent licensing program for Arizona ABS law firms.

What is an Authorized Entity

Authorized Entities of the Utah Office of Legal Services Innovation (Sandbox) are authorized to provide services across specific legal service categories (e.g. Marriage and Family, Business, End of Life Planning). Entities are authorized as one or multiple service model categories; entities may not offer services through a model for which they are not authorized.
